About the Conference:

Frostburg State University and Allegany College of Maryland will Host the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Economic Botany with a Focus on Mountain Cultures

The 53rd Annual Meeting of The Society for Economic Botany will gather the first week in June at Frostburg State University in Maryland. The theme for the meeting will be the Ethnobotany of Mountain Cultures. The conference will begin Saturday, June 2nd with a student lead service project and a photography workshop. Sunday, June 3rd, will include pre-conference fieldtrips to Dr. Jim Duke's Green Farmacy Garden, Harding's Ginseng Farm, Green Ridge State Forest, and a Nature Conservancy boreal bog. Sunday evening will feature an ACES sponsored farmers' market and entertainment by Sparky and Rhonda Rucker. The conference symposium will be held June 4th-7th and include presentations on Appalachian, Himalayan and European mountains Ethnobotany. The Open Science Network in Ethnobiology will sponsor a special symposium on Ethnobiology Education.

Additional events include the opening reception of Celebrate Forests photography exhibition by Josh Birnbaum, a student mixer sponsored by the United Plant Savers, and a presentation by Dr. W.Hardy Eshbaugh sponsored by Allegany College of Maryland

The Society for Economic Botany

The Society for Economic Botany brings together scholars, researchers, educators, practitioners, activists and students to learn all kinds of uses that various cultures have made of plants, from medicines to food to vessels. The theme of this year conference is the Ethnobotany of Mountain Cultures.

Food
Celebrating Appalachian Food Traditions with Local Food: soup beans & cornbread, collard greens & black-eyed peas, red beans & rice, stewed cabbage, goat cheese, Maryland crab cakes, country ham & sawmill gravy, BBQ pig roast, and more.  Meals will be topped off with bread pudding with bourbon sauce & sweet potato pie.  Pack your elastic waist shorts or your bike and hiking shoes. 

 

Sunday, June 3rd

The conference begins with several field trips, an afternoon farmer's market, and evening entertainment.

Field Trips: 8 am - 4 pm including: Jim Duke's Green Farmacy Garden and a Nature Conservancy boreal bog

Farmer's Market: 1-8 pm on the Compton Lawn, brought to you by the Appalachian Center for Ethnobotanical Studies(ACES) through Allegheny Mountain Naturally.  Support Mountain Maryland Farmers & Crafts people.

SRREntertainment: 7-9 pm Kicking things off on Sunday, June 3rd with folktales from Sparky and Rhonda Rucker, winners of the 2011 Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong Legacy Award. Listen while feasting on an old fashion outdoor pig roast (vegetatian options available).

Monday, June 4th

An Appalachian Welcome: Ginseng, Afrolachians, Appalachian Place-Based foods, American Chestnut, and Black Cohosh.  United Plant Savers will present about the At-Risk List and Medicinal Plant Conservation.

Dancing the night away at the Student Mixer on Monday night to traditional bluegrass music! Hear about opportunities to be involved with United Plant Savers. 

Tuesday, June 5th

Open Science Network in Ethnobiology: Technology, Networking, and Peer-Review to improve our ethnobiology curriculum and develop accreditation.

Evening speaker Dr. Hardy Eshbaugh transportation provided to Allegany College of Maryland.

Wednesday, June 6th

Mountain Cultures Around the World, <span data-jsid="text">Cretan Mountain Ethnobotany, Himalayan Ethnobotany, and more to come

Distinguished Economic Botanist Banquet

Modern Mountain Cultural Identities

Frostburg will be providing affordable shuttles from the Pittsburgh International Airport.
Please Note: Shuttles on SUNDAY, JUNE 10 HAVE BEEN CANCELLED, as the post-conference field trips are not taking place.
Shuttle space will be limited, please plan ahead.

We encourage you to stay on campus as public transportation in Frostburg is very limited.

On-campus housing available in Cambridge Hall,, single and double-rooms available. Cambridge Hall features air-conditioned cluster-style rooms with semi-private baths and micro-fridges. Cambridge Hall is centrally located near meeting and performance facilities.

Additional on-campus housing available at Edgewood Commons, just a short walk (1/4 mile) to the meeting sites. Suite-like rooms with private baths in a modern facility.

Transportation will be provided to conference attendees staying at Savage River Lodge a 20 minute drive about 10 miles from campus.  Space is limited to 18 private cabins, early reservations are suggested, 301-689-3200.

Visitors with their own cars can stay in local hotels, cabins, and camping facilities. Camping is available in neighboring Maryland State Parks: 10 miles from New Germany, 14 miles from Rocky Gap, 27 miles from Deep Creek Lake, 29 miles from Swallow Falls, and 31 miles from Herrington Manor State Parks.   Camping is also available in Frostburg at the Trail Inn. Hotels within 4 miles of campus include: Hampton Inn, Days Inn, and the Hotel Gunter.  Upscale accommodations within 10 miles include: Rocky Gap Lodge.
